- Mary (S'Mamie) Bagwell visited her Uncle William Bagwell in Greenville,
North Carolina, frequently. Uncle William and his wife Nannie had two
daughters, Frances and Gladys, and a son John. The eight Raleigh and
three Greenville cousins enjoyed one another's company, and told many
stories of shared summer activities.
It was during one of the Greenville visits that S'Mamie met native John
Long Horne. They had an eight-year courtship because S'Mamie would not
marry until her young sister Addie was married. Two weeks after the
marriage of Addie Bagwell to James Hugh Ward Sr. in Christ Church
Raleigh, John and Mary were married January 16, 1918, in the same
church.
Their first home was an apartment at the Vines House, West 5th Street,
Greenville, NC. Shortly afterwards they moved to a house on Dickson
Avenue. Their first child, a son, died shortly after birth following a
difficult delivery. Mary and John Jr. were born in 1921 and 1923.
John Sr. owned and operated a men's clothing store. As a knowledgeable
haberdasher, the business prospered until the market crashed in 1929.
