  Known as "Fox Joe" by British Troops who often tried vainly to capture him. Oldest brother owned Staten Island and part of New Jersey; taken back by British because he was pro-colonist (See Dr. Tompkins), then returned after peace. Republican for states' rights, close friend of Thomas Jefferson. Our Revolutionary ancestor. He was married to Berthia Freeman, who was the daughter of Benjamin Freeman.
